about

“David has been known as a respected teacher, writer and journalist for many years, but in many ways his great talent as a guitarist and composer has remained obscured - until now. Here at last, after four years of me badgering him, is his first solo CD.” ‘Nocturnal’ Producer Martin Taylor MBE

“An inspirational player...” Phil Castang, International Guitar Festival

“A fine debut from an excellent musician.” Neville Marten, editor of Guitar Techniques magazine

“‘Nocturnal’ is an absolute must for any self-respecting acoustic music lover.” Steve Harvey, editor of Acoustic magazine

David Mead is one of the UK’s best-selling guitar authors and a former editor of two of Europe’s leading specialist guitar magazines, Guitarist and Guitar Techniques. With six figure book sales to his credit, this latest project marks his return to musical performance with ‘Nocturnal’.

The album moves from sensitive fingerstyle arrangements of compositions by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Bill Evans to David’s own intensely melodic pieces, including the title track - an atmospheric suite in three parts, inspired by a haunting Cornish midnight seascape.

One of the many highlights on ‘Nocturnal’ has to be the duet between David and the album’s producer, guitar legend Martin Taylor. Bill Evans’ classic ‘Waltz For Debby’, originally written for piano, has undergone a spectacular transformation into a guitar tour de force, with Taylor providing a spellbinding solo at the song’s climax.

Altogether ‘Nocturnal’ is an eclectic palette of styles, encompassing the whimsical ragtime fantasies of ‘Walking The Warren’ and ‘That Lang Thing’ and the more impressionistic and obviously intensely personal tracks like ‘September Farewell’, ‘At Her Eventide’ or ‘Cloud Factory’, a psalm to childhood innocence which closes this very special collection.

The result is an album of soulful instrumentals, which received some critical acclaim on release. ... more
